iFixit.com has posted it's teardown of the new Apple TV. The findings inside? Apples A4 chip (same as the iPad and iPhone 4), an 8GB NAND flash chip, and 256MB of RAM. On the side of the Apple TV's logic board were solder pads that would be a perfect fit for the iDevices dock connector. Technology wise it's very similar to the iPad and iPhone, and now that we know it's running iOS - the jailbreaking community will be hard at work cracking this one! Read More

AppleTV Jailbroken already??

Orders for the new AppleTV were pushed back to start shipping this week, and while no one has one in hand the Jailbreak community has already said they can Jailbreak it. How you ask? A piece of software called SHAtter. SHAtter is the Dev-Team's way to overkill jailbreak any iDevice. Now how does the Jailbreaking community know that this will work? Twitter user Chpwn (who is an iPhone Developer) found a link on Apple's site to download a restore IPSW file. IPSW files are the software files (apps and OS) for iDevices. Quoted...

Ars Technica claims that an Apple spokesperson confirmed that there will not be a software update for the current AppleTV to the new version. The new AppleTV, shown at the Apple event this past Wednesday, is 1/4 the size and is meant as a streaming device as opposed to it's predecessor which had a hard drive in it which would sync your data from iTunes. John Gruber, of famed Daring Fireball says that even though the device doesn't look like iOS - it is because it's running on Apples new A4 chip (currently found in the iPad,...

Apple's annual iPod event will be held this year on September 1st. Reports are coming in that at the event, the new iPod Touch 3 will be released, with the front facing camera, and the new AppleTV (now dubbed iTV) will be released. The new iTV device has been a hot topic for some time now. Apple is trying to move the iTV in a new direction, such as having plans for 99 cent TV show rentals, running iOS 4, and being as small as an iPhone. Bloomberg has recently reported that Apple is in...

Another Swing for Apple TV

Apple's hobby product Apple TV may be seeing a new iteration this fall, making the leap from hobby to something they actually care about.   Other than the timing of the leak, this shouldn't be considered a response to Google's announcement last week of their set top box, since Apple TV has been around for three years now.   The new Apple TV is expected to be more of a front end device  using cloud storage rather than a local drive.  It is also likely it will be running the next gen iPhone OS making a nice triumvirate of Apple...

AppleTV before it was AppleTV

We love Wired.com here at The Big Apple Blog. Wired's Gadget Lab recently posted a little piece about the ORIGINAL Apple TV. Back in 1995 Apple released the Apple Interactive Television Box (ITV for short). The device (shown below) was a set-top box with Ethernet, ADB (the original Apple keyboard/mouse connector), SCSI, Audio and Video ports. The device was in a consumer trial run to 2,500 houses thanks to a partnership with British Telecom. The trial failed, and Apple pulled the plug on the device. This prototype recently sold on eBay for $46.00!!!! Twelve...
