Ars Technica claims that an Apple spokesperson confirmed that there will not be a software update for the current AppleTV to the new version. The new AppleTV, shown at the Apple event this past Wednesday, is 1/4 the size and is meant as a streaming device as opposed to it’s predecessor which had a hard drive in it which would sync your data from iTunes. John Gruber, of famed Daring Fireball says that even though the device doesn’t look like iOS – it is because it’s running on Apples new A4 chip (currently found in the iPad, and iPhone 4). Since the device is running the iOS, there is no way to get it on the older models. Square plug + Circle hole = does not compute. Sorry hobbyists, but maybe you’d be better off with a Mac Mini and Plex.
