Ars Technica claims that an Apple spokesperson confirmed that there will not be a software update for the current AppleTV to the new version. The new AppleTV, shown at the Apple event this past Wednesday, is 1/4 the size and is meant as a streaming device as opposed to it’s predecessor which had a hard drive in it which would sync your data from iTunes. John Gruber, of famed Daring Fireball says that even though the device doesn’t look like iOS – it is because it’s running on Apples new A4 chip (currently found in the iPad, and iPhone 4). Since the device is running the iOS, there is no way to get it on the older models. Square plug + Circle hole = does not compute. Sorry hobbyists, but maybe you’d be better off with a Mac Mini and Plex.
Apple posted details about the upcoming iOS 4.2 update for the iPad. The page lists all the new features for the iPad, most of which the current iPhone has – such as multitasking and folders. New features for the iPad (as discussed at the Apple event on the 1st) are – Printing, AirPlay (streaming to/from iTunes/AppleTV), Game Center, Unified Inboxes in Mail, and better enterprise support. Of course this is all just to get our mouths watering since the software update won’t be released until November.
Will knowing this information stop you from buy an iPad until it’s released? We want to know!

See – you fell for it too. While facebook used to be plagued with “Free [insert computer product here]” ad such as the one to the right <

Really? No, not really!
– Apple’s new social media service, Ping, is now spammers next target.
Security firm Sophos comments that Apple did nothing to implement any sort of URL filtering to stop spammers, yet your profile picture will not show until approved by Apple – probably for content filtering (so no pics of flipping the bird). Ping also doesn’t require a credit card or any other positive identification, so fake accounts are easily created. “But if you actually want an Apple device, my advice is to go out and buy one, as filling out surveys will likely only end in tears.” <– great advice
Yesterday, Twitter released their official universal app for the iDevices. The iPad version now takes full advantage of the large screen and new features have been added to support it. So now with the app you can look at your Twitter timeline, but when you click on links a new pane opens up to show you the link right in the app. Panes can also be moved with ease to cover/show other panes.

thanks to macrumors.com for the pic
If you are a regular Twitter user – download this app. If you are not a regular Twitter user – download the app anyway just to see how cool it works.
While iPad users stand on edge waiting for the wonderful new iOS software to reach them, Apple has already updated it! Originally when iOS 4 was announced, iPad users were going to have to wait until November to get it. Now, when November does roll around we’ll automatically get iOS 4.2 and best of all – for free!
iOS 4.2, which will be released for all iDevices running it, will bring AirPlay and wireless Printing to the iPad. AirPlay is apples new software that allows you to stream video and audio from iTunes to your iPad, or from your iPad to the new AppleTV. Printing…well it’s printing people
We’ll cover more in November…you know – when it comes out!
Kara Swisher (aka mini-Walt Mossberg) wrote an article on All Things Digital about why there was no Facebook integration with the new Ping service – Apple’s new Social Media tool that is now a huge part of iTunes 10. Jobs, according to Swisher, pretty much said that Apple had discussions with Facebook but they ultimately went nowhere. Maybe they are in limbo with (Inception spoiler alert) Leo DiCaprio and his movie wife.
Swisher then asked Jobs “Why not have Ping incorporate with Facebook connect?” and Jobs replied with a great answer “We could, I guess”. How classic!

One of these things is not like the other
Ok so we are a little late with posting this today…but it was a busy day for us.
New iPod Touch, new iPod Nano, new iPod shuffle, new AppleTV and new iTunes.
The breakdown.
iPodTouch – now has FaceTime for WiFi video calls, Retina display, and HD video recording. Also thinner and a longer battery. Price starts at $229 for the 8GB. Just like the iPhone, without the Phone.
iPod Nano – new design, touchscreen, built in FM tuner, and a clip (like that of the shuffle). Price – $149 for the 8GB, 179 for 16GB
iPod Shuffle – slight redesign, new colors. $49 bucks will get you a 2GB. Simple, clean setup.
AppleTV – no rename, it’s still called AppleTV. Only $99!! They removed the hard drive, so the new unit is much smaller (1/4 the size). It does iTunes, Neflix and YouTube streaming. It runs on Apple’s A4 processor (much like the other iDevices), and comes with HDMI and optical audio out. The device also has a 10/100 Ethernet connection, but works over WifI 802.11g (which is faster than 10/100). It even comes with a remote (which if anyone is counting is $29 on it’s own).
iTunes – iTunes 10 (now available) comes with a new redesign (including a new icon). Now with “Ping” The social media network to share with your friends the music you listen to…Great now everyone will know that my fianceé dumped her whole Lady Gaga library on my computer in an attempt to back up her pink iPod. At the keynote Jobs said “It’s like Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes”.
Oh and if you have an iPad – you have to wait till november for iOS 4.2 – which will allow for printing!!!
If you have some time and need to kill 1.5 hours of your day go ahead and watch the keynote (in case you missed it live)
After a slew of emails, I think we’ve gotten the point. The Apple Store is down! Clearly for the event, but let’s start the guessing game of what’s coming out next. I think it will be an iPod Nano Phone…your turn!

What seems to be a blow to the blogosphere (we aren’t offended), Apple announced that it will live stream the event that is happening later today. An Apple tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous, says that todays live stream will test the new server farm that was built in North Carolina.
In Apple’s press bulletin “Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™.”
While we all assume the new iPod Nanos, and the new iTV – I personally feel like there could be more up Steve’s black turtlenecked shirt sleeve. This is the first time in years Apple will be live streaming so Steve knows the pressure is on.

Steve Jobs want You!
